The things we do for love, right? But, what are you really willing to do for it? Whether it's the love of significant other, a child or a family member, some of us are willing to do a lot. I heard a song in the car the other day that made me think about this a bit deeper. The song, "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)", by the Proclaimers was first released in 1988. But it didn't get famous until it got on the Benny and Joon soundtrack in 1993. I was always a huge fan of this song. It was peppy and just always seemed to put me in a good mood. And to this day when they play on the radio, I sing along.
"But I would walk five hundred miles
And I would walk five hundred more
Just to be the man who walked a thousand
Miles to fall down at your door"
Then another well-known song came out in 2001 by Vanessa Carlton, entitled "A Thousand Miles".
If I could fall into the sky
Do you think time would pass me by?
'Cause you know I'd walk a thousand miles
If I could just see you tonight
That song also talks about walking to the person you love. In both cases, they talk about 1,000 miles. So this got me thinking. Would I walk 1,000 miles for someone I loved? Roughly 1,000 miles from my hometown of Des Moines, Iowa I took a look at 4 destinations that I would possibly have to walk to. On my list:
- Albuquerque, New Mexico
- San Antonio, Texas
- Big Timber, Montana
- Charlotte, North Carolina
It would take 15 hours to drive to one of those locations. According to Google, to walk a distance that takes 15 hours in a car, it would take a typical person approximately 300 to 450 hours of actual walking time, or roughly 1 to 2 months when factoring in necessary rest, sleep, and meals. The exact time depends on the type of driving (city vs. highway) and the walker's endurance.
So, would I walk for at least a month for the person I loved? That's a big commitment. But, the answer for me is, yes. If one of my kids or my better half was stuck 1,000 miles away, and I had no car, I would walk it. It may take me awhile, because I walk slow, but I would do it. The question is, would you do it for the ones you love?
