Iowa State vs Kansas: The History

Iowa State and Kansas played their first men's basketball game back on February 20th, 1908.  So for 118 years the two teams have battled.  The overall record for Iowa State vs Kansas is 70 wins and 192 losses (as of 2/20/26).  Over T.J. Otzelberger's time as head coach for Iowa State the Cyclones have played Kansas 10 times.  Over that time the Clones have only had 4 victories.  All 4 victories were in Ames, where of course the Cyclones have Hilton Magic on their side. Let's take a look at the overall record in this series:

Iowa State vs Kansas in Ames, IA: 44 Wins and 74 Losses

Iowa State vs Kansas in Lawrence, KS: 16 Wins and 99 Losses

Iowa State vs Kansas on Neutral Court: 10 Wins and 19 Losses

Earlier this year, the Cyclones were ranked 2nd in the Country and undefeated.  They travelled to play Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse and were beat 84-63.  It was not a pretty game.  But, the most recent matchup in Ames on February 14, 2026 the Cyclones dominated the Jayhawks 74-56.

Well, the last 4 times Iowa State has played Kansas in Ames they are perfect.  I expect nothing of the same for them in the future.  I expect T.J. will have his team pumped up and ready to go.  I go back and look at one of my favorite games against Kansas from the 2015-2016 season for some excitement before this game.  At the very end Matt Thomas steals the ball and dunks it to seal the wonderful victory against the number 4 Jayhawks.  Who will win the next time?   We shall see. Go Cyclones!
