I got to thinking about this the other day, probably while standing in line somewhere completely mundane like Hy-Vee or at Target. What are the actual odds that my girlfriend and I crossed paths at some point before we officially met. Same grocery store, same stoplight, same crowded event. With absolutely zero idea the other person existed?
And once I started pulling on that thread, I couldn't stop.
If you grew up within, say, 30 miles of where you eventually met your partner, you've probably logged thousands of hours in overlapping physical space over the years without realizing it. Same grocery stores. Same gas stations. Same handful of restaurants everybody in a mid size town rotates through. Same high school football games, movies, Targets on a Saturday.
It's not really a "needle in a haystack" problem, it's more like two people slowly filling in the same small haystack from opposite corners for 10 years before finally bumping into each other in the middle. The geography does a lot of the work. You don't need fate. You just need a shared zip code and enough birthdays.
Here's the detail that always messes with my head a little. If you go by old photos, receipts, yearbooks, whatever, there's a real chance you can find a moment where you were both physically present at the same event and simply never spoke. Same concert. Same wedding of a mutual friend of a friend you didn't know was mutual yet. Same waiting room. You were extras in each other's background for years before you got cast in the actual scene together.
That's the weird gut punch of it, it's not really about beating impossible odds. It's that the odds were never that impossible to begin with. You were both just going about your lives, a few years and a few feet away from the thing that was eventually going to matter more than almost anything else.
I think we tell the "how we met" story like it's the beginning, but for a lot of people it's really more like the moment two long running parallel storylines finally intersect. The universe wasn't working overtime to engineer some big meet cute. It was just patient, and the two of you kept showing up in the same general orbit until eventually you showed up in the same room and noticed.
Which honestly feels like a better kind of romantic than "destiny." Less magic, more geography and stubborn timing. But, I will take it!
