Grab your hot cocoa and a warm blanket, because holiday movie season is officially here! If you are looking for something festive to kick off your winter watchlist without spending a dime, I have the perfect suggestion for you.
I just finished watching Second Chance Holiday, a brand-new Christmas rom-com that just premiered on The Roku Channel. First things first: it is 100% free to stream, which automatically makes it a win in my book.
What really drew me to this one is the leading lady. The movie stars entrepreneur, cookbook author, and lifestyle maven Ayesha Curry, who you probably also know as the wife of Golden State Warriors superstar Steph Curry. While she has done small acting gigs in the past, this marks her official debut in a feature film leading role.
The Plot: Curses and Christmas Wishes
In the film, Ayesha plays Chelsey Banks, a professional dating expert who ironically suffers from a bizarre personal curse: she keeps getting dumped right around Christmas every single year. After her latest holiday heartbreak, she heads back to her hometown for a fresh start. Naturally, fate steps in, and she runs right into her high school sweetheart, played by Matthew Daddario.
As the holiday magic takes over, Chelsey has to figure out if her string of bad luck was actually a sign guiding her back to her first love.
My Honest Review
Let's be completely candid here: Second Chance Holiday isn't going to win an Oscar, and it probably won't replace Elf or Home Alone as an all-time masterpiece. It hits a lot of the familiar, predictable tropes we expect from a streaming Christmas movie.
That being said? I thoroughly enjoyed it.
Ayesha Curry was surprisingly great. Playing a relationship guru when you’ve famously only ever dated your husband of 15 years could have felt forced, but she brought a ton of genuine charm, warmth, and great comedic timing to the screen. She has an incredibly natural presence that kept me rooted in the story. The plot itself is genuinely entertaining, cozy, and packed with exactly the kind of feel good holiday spirit you want on a chilly evening. It is lighthearted, easy to watch, and leaves you smiling by the time the credits roll.
If you have a Roku device, the Roku app, or just a web browser, it's absolutely worth queuing up for a casual, festive movie night!
Out of 10 Popcorn Kernels, I give it a 6.5.
