Bumper Sliding, Skitching, Bumper Hitching - Whatever You Called It. Do You Remember?

Bumper Sliding

Back in my late teens, early 20's I did some very stupid stuff.  Was it fun at the time, yes.  Was it dumb, yes.  But now I can look back on it and think about it a bit more.  You have to remember, when I was doing this the cell phone was very basic, there weren't a million social media options and people actually spent time hanging out as opposed to locked in their room staring at their phone or TV.  Life was really different back then for the youth.

One of the things I remember doing with my two good friends at the time, Jon and Troy, was bumper sliding.  At least that's what we called it.  Around the country it's called many other things as well, such at Skitching and Bumper Hitching.  Basically you would wait until a really good snow, or ice fall to come to the area.  For us, living in Iowa, we had many occasions that worked nicely for bumper sliding.  Then you would head to an area that was not busy at all.  Because the last thing you needed was to be doing this around other cars.  We would usually find an empty parking lot, or go out on the streets past midnight when no one was out.  Then you would have one person drive, and have the others outside, holding on to the bumper of the car and sliding on their feet in the ice or snow.  Now, many others used sleds or other things the car would pull, but we never did that. We would just grab the bumper and slide!!

I can just picture us now... zooming along in an old Ford Probe, holding on for dear life, but having the time of our lives.  At times you would do donuts in the snow or try to whip the person riding off by taking sharp turns.  Yes, it was fun. But, so, so stupid.  Would I want my kids doing it? Hell, no. And it appears to be illegal now most places.  So, don't go out there and try this.

Just know, this old 47 year old had a blast bumper sliding back in the day.
