Cold Slither: How A Song From The 80's Haunts My Mind

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero had an episode called "Cold Slither" (Series 1, Episode 34), featuring the Dreadnoks as a rock band and originally aired on December 2, 1985.  I was 7 years old at the time. The episode is well known for the song "Cold Slither" and featured characters Zartan, Ripper, Buzzer, and Torch.  While I loved the show at the time, I didn't know realize that over 40 years later, that song would still be stuck in my head.

In the show, Cobra used the song to control citizens minds.  It was their mind control weapon.  Now, I know this was just a cartoon, but I'm starting to think it was real!  Now, hear me out.  I am crazy, but not that crazy.  But, the fact that the song just pops up in my brain from time to time, 40 years later, has me thinking there is more to it.

But from everything I have read, it's completely normal to always have a song in your head. It's a phenomenon called an "earworm" or "involuntary musical imagery," with studies showing nearly 90% of people experience them weekly as the brain keeps itself busy, often triggered by memories, stress, or simple, catchy tunes. While usually harmless, persistent, distressing earworms might sometimes link to anxiety or OCD, but for most, it's just a common, quirky aspect of our inner mental life.

So, I'm not crazy?! It's weird how such a small song from my youth, could get stuck in my head all my life, and just pop up from time to time.  Do you have any songs like this? That you just have pop up in your head and it has lasted a really long time?  I sure hope not!

A new version of the same song just came out in 2025! Be careful!
