I've had Christmas 46 times in my life so far, and of course I have some favorite ones over the years. But, I will say that each year is great for one reason or another. But I think as a parent I break it into two different categories. Christmas as a child and Christmas as a parent:
Christmas as a child - Christmas was always great as a kid. Probably because I wasn't the one spending the money. I remember my house as a youngster, with it's orange carpet, yellow kitchen and lime green bedroom. Oh yes, the styles back then were a little different. And so were toys for us kids. Back then we would get Christmas catalogs that had all the toys we wanted. My sister and I would go thru and circle the things we wanted. I remember G.I. Joe, Transformers, Cabbage Patch Kids, He-Man and all the other things I wanted back then. There were no gift cards back then for everything, you would actually get a gift to unwrap. What I really appreciate is my parents always spoiled me. I know we didn't have a lot of money, but I know they did what they could, to get me the very best stuff I wanted. For some reason the one thing I remember as a kid is my mom had hid some presents in a back closest at our house. She totally forgot about them and a couple months later I found some G.I. Joe figures that I wanted so bad. It was like getting a Spring Christmas!
Christmas as a parent - Christmas as a parent is totally different then when I was a kid. Of course now I have to pay for everything. But there is a joy from giving to my 2 kids and seeing their excitement when they open things. Now, I will admit, I enjoyed it more when they were younger. No that they are in their teens, Christmas is totally different. Those days when they were younger and I picked out things for them and it was so much fun. Now, my daughter gives me her Amazon wish list with everything she wants and my son only wants particular things as well he gives me the list for. There is none of that excitement of picking things out I think they will like, because if I do, they won't like it.
What's your favorite Christmas memory? Did you get a bike one year? Maybe that box of favorite baseball cards? Just know this. Be grateful for what you get. Because not everyone has the wonderful things we get and give during the Holiday!
