Every time autumn rolls around, I find myself on a very specific, highly focused culinary mission: tracking down the perfect apple cider donut. There is just something about a crisp fall morning and a pastry that perfectly captures the essence of the harvest season.
Recently, my girlfriend and I took a trip out to a popular orchard just outside of Chicago. She had been hyping it up for a while, confidently claiming they served the absolute best donuts around. I’ll give credit where it’s due, they were genuinely good. They were warm, sweet, and hit the spot.
But as I took my second bite, she leaned across the picnic table with a smug, victorious look on her face. "Well?" she asked, raising an eyebrow. "Admit it. Best you've ever had."
I chewed slowly, deliberately stalling for time. "They’re good," I conceded, wiping a stray crystal of sugar off my chin. "Very good. Solid 8 out of 10."
"An eight?!" She looked personally insulted. "These are a masterpiece! What could possibly beat this?"
"Two words," I said, looking her dead in the eye. "Center. Grove."
She rolled her eyes so hard I thought they might get stuck. "Oh my god, you and your Iowa bias."
"It’s not bias, it’s a biological fact," I insisted, gesturing with my half eaten donut. "This Illinois donut is trying too hard. It’s flash. Center Grove? That is pure, unadulterated Iowa goodness. It has soul."
We agreed to disagree, but as I sat there, my mind immediately drifted back to Iowa. Because let's be honest, when it comes to pure, unadulterated autumn perfection, nothing touches the legendary apple cider donuts from Center Grove Orchard.
If you’ve ever stood in that steadily moving line at the bakery, smelling the sweet, spiced aroma wafting through the air, you know exactly what I mean. It all comes down to three things:
• The Freshness: They don't just feel fresh; they are practically molten. Getting a box that is still radiating heat makes all the difference in the world.
• The Texture: This is where Center Grove truly wins. The exterior has this incredibly delicate, slight crispness from the fryer that is immediately followed by a melt in your mouth, tender, cakey middle. It balances being perfectly moist without ever feeling heavy.
• The Flavor: A lot of places make donuts that just taste like sugar and generic spice. Center Grove actually lets the apple cider shine. It’s a deep, concentrated apple flavor, beautifully complemented by a generous dusting of cinnamon sugar.
Chicago might have the big city lights and some fantastic seasonal spots, but Iowa has the heart of autumn. Sorry to my girlfriend, but my loyalty remains firmly planted in the Cambridge soil. If you are in the Central Iowa area and haven't made the pilgrimage out to the orchard yet this season, do yourself a favor. Grab a bench, grab a dozen, and let the sugar do its work.
Plus, if you are looking for even more fun things to do, especially with the kids, they have a ton of activities to do there as well. Find more info here.
