Where Do Superheroes Come From: Norwalk, Iowa?

Brandon Routh and Jason Momoa

What are the odds that a small Midwestern town of around 15 thousand people would produce two of the most iconic superheroes in cinematic history?  For Norwalk, Iowa, that impossible statistic is a proud reality. In the late 1990s, the hallways of Norwalk High School were simultaneously home to both Jason Momoa (DC’s Aquaman) and Brandon Routh (DC’s Superman Returns).

Long before they wore capes or carried tridents on the big screen, Jason Momoa and Brandon Routh were simply classmates growing up in Norwalk. Both attended Norwalk High School and even played on the school's soccer team together. Their paths would eventually take them to Hollywood, where they became two of DC Comics' most recognizable heroes.

Brandon Routh became the Man of Steel in Superman Returns (2006), bringing one of the world's most iconic superheroes back to movie theaters. His portrayal captured the classic optimism and kindness that Superman has represented for generations. Routh later continued his DC legacy by portraying Ray Palmer, also known as The Atom, on television.

Jason Momoa, meanwhile, found worldwide fame through roles in Game of Thrones before making an unforgettable splash as Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe. His larger-than-life personality, humor, and rugged charisma transformed Aquaman into one of DC's most popular modern heroes.

One of the coolest pieces of trivia is that Superman and Aquaman didn't just exist in the same fictional universe, they actually knew each other years before Hollywood.  Routh has shared that he and Momoa played soccer together and even participated in Cub Scouts while growing up in Norwalk. It's the kind of story that sounds too perfect to be true, but it's a real piece of Iowa history.

The next time you drive through Norwalk, Iowa, remember that you are in the presence of cinematic royalty. Norwalk proves that you don't need a radioactive spider or a rocket from Krypton to become a hero, sometimes, all you need is a couple of years on an Iowa soccer field!
