My house was built in 1994. So it's a little older. But when I purchased it 3 years ago, one of the first things I did was replace the thermostat in the house. I am pretty sure it was the original thermostat still in the house and I wanted to be able to control the temperature from my phone. So the answer? A thermostat that connects to my Wi-Fi, so I can control from anywhere on my phone.
In my case, I got the Sensi Lite Smart Thermostat on Amazon. I got it for around $80 at the time and it worked well for my older home because no c-wire was required, which is something you should check and see if you will need for your house. Installation took me under 10 minutes and setting it up on my phone another 10 minutes.
The wonderful thing about having control on my phone is, if I need to change the temperature and I'm upstairs, I can do it from the comfort of my bedroom. Just hop on the phone and change it. Yes, you can still control it from the thermostat at home as well. So you can make adjustments right as you walk by it just like a normal thermostat. Another thing that is nice is I may be at work and my kids leave for the day. I can hop on my phone and turn the thermostat up or down, depending on the season and save myself some money.
Should you buy one of these if you don't have one? Absolutely. I know my local Gas/Energy Company gave a rebate for the purchase as well, so the unit ended up being free. So definitely look into if your local company has rebates.
Save money and make life easier!
