The year 1991 is famous for the end of the Cold War with the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the beginning and end of the Persian Gulf War, and major technological shifts like the birth of the World Wide Web and the first GSM mobile calls, alongside significant cultural moments such as Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and groundbreaking films like Terminator 2 and Beauty and the Beast.
In 1991, I was 13 years old and in 7th grade. While many things happened that year, the thing that sticks out to me is a song by Boyz to Men. In April of that year a song came out called Motownphilly. That song by a new group called Boyz to Men, was the coolest song in the world. At least according to me. I remember listening to it over and over again.
After being discovered by New Edition's Michael Bivins, Boyz II Men signed their first record deal and released their debut album “Cooleyhighharmony” in 1991, which had this wonderful song.
Just listening to this song again and singing along with it picks me up for my day. It's still a great song. Some songs don't sound good over 30 years after they first came out. This one does. What was your favorite song from this time period? Go listen to it today and relive your youth!
