Nickelodeon’s iconic green slime is a semi-viscous, neon-green substance that has been the network's signature mess for over 40 years. Originally introduced as a gross-out gag, it evolved into a symbol of "solidarity for kids" and a "badge of honor" for celebrities. And yes, I always wanted to be slimed as a kid.
Slime debuted in 1979 on the Canadian sketch comedy show You Can't Do That on Television (which Nickelodeon later syndicated). The "I Don't Know" Rule: On that show, a character would be slimed if they said the phrase "I don't know". Accidental Discovery: According to director Geoffrey Darby, the first batch was "simulated sewage" made of food scraps that had turned green and moldy after a week-long filming delay. It was such a hit that it became a permanent feature.
What is it Made Of?
While the exact mixture has changed over the decades and varies by show, the most common ingredients are food-based: The original recipe was a mix of vanilla pudding, applesauce, green food coloring, and oatmeal. Later shows like Double Dare added baby shampoo (specifically "no-tears" formulas) to make the slime easier to wash out of hair and prevent it from hardening under hot studio lights. And technically it is edible, as it is mostly food, though the addition of shampoo makes it unappealing to swallow.
Where did you see it on Nickelodeon?
Double Dare: Used extensively in the Physical Challenges and the famous Slime Canal obstacle.
Figure It Out: Panelists were slimed if they performed a "Secret Slime Action".
Kids' Choice Awards: Since 1988, getting slimed has been a major highlight for celebrities attending the show.
NFL Slimetime: Modern broadcasts feature "NVP" (Nickelodeon Valuable Player) winners getting slimed.
The slime became so central to the Nickelodeon brand that it inspired products like Green Slime Shampoo, Green Slime Cereal by General Mills, and even green ketchup. In recent years, Nickelodeon has expanded "SlimeFest" music festivals globally, where attendees can get slimed in person.
