The MonsterVerse expands from the big screen to television with Apple TV+’s Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. This ambitious series shifts the focus away from pure monster brawls to explore the human cost of living in a world ruled by Titans. The show stars Kurt Russell and Wyatt Russell (father and son in real life), who play the older and younger versions of each other in the show.
The series takes place across two distinct timelines to piece together the origins of the mysterious Monarch organization:
- The 1950s: Army officer Lee Shaw, scientist Keiko Miura, and cryptozoologist Bill Randa first discover proof of ancient, giant beasts.
- The 2015 Post-G-Day Era: Following Godzilla’s devastating battle in San Francisco, two half-siblings uncover their father’s secret ties to Monarch.
- The Present Connection: An older Lee Shaw bridges the two eras, holding the keys to what Monarch is desperately trying to hide.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters successfully proves that the MonsterVerse can survive on the small screen. It is easily the most human-centric story in the franchise. While the modern teenage drama occasionally tests your patience, the exceptional performances by Kurt and Wyatt Russell, combined with stunning visual effects, make this a must-watch for Godzilla fans and sci-fi enthusiasts alike.
My advice is to watch it. You can get Apple TV+ for only $12.99 a month and cancel anytime. Plus, you can watch Ted Lasso while you have it!
Out of 10 Popcorn Kernels, I give it a 7.5
