My Height Versus NBA Stars

Victor Wembanyama, who plays for the San Antonio Spurs, in the NBA is 7'4".  I am 6'1" tall.  Which in my daily life, I am taller than most of the people around me.  A 7'4" tall person standing side by side with a 6'1" tall person creates an extreme, eye-catching height difference. The 7'4" person towers a full 15 inches (38.1 cm) taller.

To put this into perspective:

  • The Eye-Level: The top of the 6'1" person's head will reach just about the bottom of the 7'4" person's chest.
  • The Shoulder Level: The 6'1" person's shoulders will sit roughly at the height of the 7'4" person's stomach/lower ribcage.
  • Proportional Difference: While both may have similarly-sized heads, the 7'4" individual will have drastically longer limbs (arms and legs) and a longer torso.
Now Wembanyama is tall, but he's not the tallest NBA player of all-time.  The tallest players in NBA history are Gheorghe Mureșan and Manute Bol, who both stood at a staggering 7 feet 7 inches.  Bol had a 10 year NBA career and is renowned as one of the best shot-blockers in basketball history.  He is actually the only player to finish his career with more blocked shots than points scored!

On the opposite end of that spectrum is Muggsey Bogues at 5'3" tall. He is the shortest player to ever play in the NBA.  Despite his lack of height, Bogues utilized blazing speed and a 44-inch vertical leap to become a formidable playmaker and defender for 14 years. He even recorded 39 blocked shots over his career, famously denying 7'0" Hall of Famer Patrick Ewing.

It's crazy how different sizes can work in the NBA with different skills.  But one thing is for sure, even being taller than Muggsey Bogues, isn't gonna get me on the court.  Think about this: Victor Wembanyama features a massive wingspan of around 8 feet.  His wingspan is bigger than me easily!  Imagine trying to shoot over him!  Crazy to think about.
