The I Do’s, The I Don’ts, and The Unleashed Uncles: A Field Guide to Wedding People Watching

The I Do’s, The I Don’ts, and The Unleashed Uncles: A Field Guide to Wedding People Watching

I spent this past weekend at my nephew’s wedding, and while the ceremony was beautiful and the couple looked radiant, I was reminded of a universal truth: Weddings are the absolute best place on earth for people watching. When you trap 200 distant relatives, old college friends, and coworkers in a room with an open bar, fancy clothes, and emotional vulnerability, things are going to get weird. Wedding guests react to the day in highly specific, deeply hilarious ways.

If you are heading to a wedding anytime soon, look out for these classic character types. They are definitely in the crowd.

1. The "Open Bar" Olympian

This guest treats the reception like a high stakes sporting event. They’ve laid down a solid base layer of cocktail hour quiches, and the moment the toast concludes, they are out of the gate. You can spot them by the fact that they are somehow holding three drinks at once. One for them, one for their spouse, and an "emergency backup" beverage. By 9:00 PM, they will either be your best friend or asleep in a decorative armchair.

2. The Over Invested Dancer

Every reception has one person who takes the DJ’s playlist as a personal, spiritual challenge. It doesn’t matter if it’s the Chicken Dance, Proud Mary, or an obscure EDM track. They are on the floor, clearing a five foot radius. They’ll attempt a backflip, rip a seam in their trousers, or drop into a low squat during a ballad. They are sweaty, they are wearing a tie around their forehead like a bandana, and they are living their absolute best life.

3. The Crying But Nobody Knows Why Relative

We all love a good happy tear during the vows. But there is always that one aunt or distant cousin who is sobbing uncontrollably into a linen napkin before the bridal party even enters. Are they moved by love? Are they remembering their own wedding? Did they see the catering bill? Nobody knows. They just sit there, radiating pure, unadulterated emotion while everyone else looks around awkwardly.

4. The Rogue Toast Giver

Speeches are the ultimate wildcard. While the Maid of Honor usually plays it safe, the Best Man or a rogue groomsman is a ticking time bomb. This is the person who gets handed the microphone and immediately forgets that the bride’s grandmother is sitting in the front row. They will start an inside joke that makes absolutely no sense to anyone else, reference a spring break trip from 2012, or randomly burst into a theatrical song to explain how awesome the groom is. Watch the bride’s face during this—it’s a masterclass in smiling through pure terror.

5. The Toddler Chaos Agent

Kids at weddings are an elite chaotic force. They will either give an adorable, completely incoherent speech into a live mic, or they will sabotage the aesthetics. They’ll hide 100 tiny plastic ducks around the venue, use the dance floor as a giant slip-and-slide, or loudly yell their honest, filter free opinion during the quietest part of the ceremony.

Weddings are expensive, meticulous, and stressful to plan. But the best parts are always the bits you can't script. The wobbly high heels on the dance floor, the inside jokes, and the pure joy of watching your family let their guard down. Congrats to my nephew and his bride, and thank you to the guests for the top tier entertainment!
