They tell you that turning 45 is a milestone. They don't tell you the milestone is marked by a plastic jug of liquid that tastes like lemon scented battery acid. Yes, a few years ago I crossed the threshold into adulthood and underwent my very first colonoscopy. It turns out that facing your own mortality involves a lot less profound philosophy and a lot more soft ply toilet paper.
The Prep: A Journey of Biblical Proportions
The procedure itself is quite straightforward. It's the preparation phase the night before that truly tests your resolve. The instructions are written with an eerie calmness: "Drink eight ounces every fifteen minutes." What they really mean is, "Prepare to spend significant quality time with your plumbing."
By hour three, I had developed an intimate relationship with my bathroom decor. I began to look at my houseplants with envy; they certainly don't have to follow a strict liquid regimen. I contemplated the meaning of life, the universe, and why anyone thought artificial "cherry" flavor would be the go-to choice for medical prep.
The Silver Lining: The Ultimate Day Off
But let’s talk about the absolute best part of this medical rite of passage. It's the guilt free time off!
In today’s hustle culture, you can’t just take a Tuesday off to stare at the ceiling. If you call in sick with a cold, you might feel obligated to check your messages. But when you tell the world you’re heading in for a routine screening? Complete radio silence. No one wants follow up questions. It's the gold standard of uninterrupted leave!
The experience at the clinic is surprisingly restful. You get settled in, the medical team handles everything, and you drift off into a blissful, restorative nap. You wake up feeling refreshed and legally excused from making any major life decisions for the rest of the day. I spent my afternoon on the couch, enjoying some light snacks, watching trash television, and ignoring every notification with zero remorse.
Survival Advice for First Timers
If your time has come to join the club, do not panic. Here is my hard earned, non-medical advice for navigating the experience:
- Prioritize comfort. Invest in high quality, soft bathroom supplies. You’ll appreciate the extra care during your preparation hours.
- Keep it cold. Chilling the prep liquid makes it much easier to manage. Using a straw can also help it go down quickly.
- Secure the entertainment. Fully charge your phone or tablet. You will have plenty of downtime, so it's the perfect opportunity to catch up on a podcast, digital book or show on Netflix.
- Plan the recovery. Have a plan for a nice, gentle meal for when you get home. Or go my route. I had my mom pick me up Chick-fil-a, which I don't remember at all! But I'm sure it tasted wonderful!
Ultimately, the peace of mind that comes with a clean bill of health is worth the effort. It’s a standard part of staying healthy, the professionals are experts at making you feel comfortable, and that afternoon nap is a rare treat! Make the best of the situation!
