Looking back at my time at Sacred Heart School in West Des Moines, Iowa, few memories stand out quite as vividly as 8th grade science class and the legendary Great Egg Drop Challenge. There was something uniquely thrilling about watching Mr. Windschitl (our science teacher) standing at the top of the school building, holding a contraption you built with your own hands, and launching it into the air to see if your egg would survive the plunge.
What is the Great Egg Drop Challenge?
The Great Egg Drop is a classic physics and engineering competition. The goal is simple: design and build a structure that can protect a raw chicken egg from cracking when dropped from a significant height. It is a hands-on lesson in kinetic energy, force, momentum, and structural integrity. As students, we had to think like real engineers, balancing weight, materials, and gravity to shield our fragile cargo.
Winning Strategies for Survival
Winning the challenge required creativity and a solid grasp of science. Students generally took a few different paths to victory:
-Shock Absorption: Wrapping the egg in soft materials like cotton balls, bubble wrap, or cereal to cushion the impact.
-Terminal Velocity Reduction: Attaching parachutes or plastic sails to slow the descent and minimize the crash force.
-Exoskeleton Shields: Building rigid outer cages out of straws, popsicle sticks, or toothpicks to absorb the energy of the hit before it reached the egg.
-Suspension Systems: Suspending the egg in the exact center of a box using rubber bands, allowing the egg to move safely without hitting the walls.
A Blueprint for Victory: The Straw Tetrahedron
One of the most memorable winning entries from our class relied on a brilliant mix of a rigid exoskeleton and a suspension system. The student constructed a large, geometric pyramid (a tetrahedron) entirely out of plastic drinking straws and masking tape. In the exact center of this lightweight frame, they suspended the raw egg using a web of rubber bands.
When dropped from the Sacred Heart roof, the device behaved exactly as planned:
- The plastic straws bent and crumpled upon hitting the pavement, absorbing the initial brunt of the impact energy.
- The rubber bands stretched and gave way, preventing the sudden, violent stop that usually cracks an eggshell.
- The outer frame completely collapsed, but the egg emerged completely flawless without a single scratch.
That day on the Sacred Heart roof was full of high stakes, nervous laughs, and a lot of messy cleanups for the less fortunate designs. Including mine, which didn't quite make it. But, it remains one of my absolute favorite school memories. It was a perfect mix of chaotic fun and real science!
