There is something inherently thrilling about a roller coaster. You climb the hill, you look out over the park, and you brace for the drop. But what happens when you strip away the view?
Riding a roller coaster in the pitch black changes the entire game. Without your eyes to guide you, your brain loses its predictability. You can’t see the drop coming. You can’t brace for the hard bank to the left. Every twist, turn, and plunge becomes a complete surprise, turning a familiar ride into an adrenaline fueled mystery.
When you fly through the dark, your other senses explode. The roar of the tracks sounds louder. The wind feels sharper against your face. You feel the G-force pulling at your body with double the intensity because you are feeling the track instead of seeing it. It is pure, unadulterated speed.
My First Time on Space Mountain: A Galactic Awakening at 32
I’ll never forget the day I truly understood this phenomenon. I was 32 years old when I finally made it to Walt Disney World, standing in the neon lit, futuristic queue of Magic Kingdom's iconic Space Mountain.
While many people experience this ride for the first time as kids, tackling it as an adult gave it a whole new weight. Looking at the massive white mountain from the outside, I thought I knew what to expect. Boy, was I wrong. The moment our sleek, rocket shaped train clicked out of the loading bay, we were plunged into a neon tinted void. Then, the stars came out.
As we climbed the lift hill, surrounded by glowing galaxies and cosmic projections, my heart was hammering with a level of anticipation I hadn't felt in years. And then, we dropped.
On paper, Space Mountain isn't Disney's fastest coaster. But in the dark? It felt like we were breaking the sound barrier. I remember screaming as the rocket whipped around sharp corners, completely unable to see the track ahead. Every dip felt like dropping into a black hole. With my adult height, I genuinely thought my head was going to hit the low-hanging support beams.
When our rocket finally slammed on the brakes in the strobe lit tunnel at the end, my hair was a wild mess, my eyes were wide, and I was laughing hysterically. I didn't just ride a coaster. I had survived a journey through deep space. It was a beautiful reminder that no matter your age, you can still be utterly blindsided by pure, childlike joy.
Ever since that day, I’ve been hooked on the dark.
