We have all been there. You reach blindly into a snack bag in a dark movie theater or accept a mystery sample at a grocery store. You chew, you pause, and you think: What exactly am I eating? Usually, it is just an unfamiliar spice or a weird flavor of chip. But sometimes, the truth is much worse.
Road trips do strange things to people. Hours trapped in a confined metal box can turn even the most loving family into a psychological experiment. When I was young, I was the captive audience and prime target for my older sisters.
The Snack That Bit Back
On one particular highway stretch, the boredom had clearly peaked for my sisters. I was staring out the window when an open hand appeared in my face.
"Want a snack?" one of them asked, completely casual.
Always hungry, I didn’t hesitate. I grabbed the small, brown, square shaped biscuit and popped it into my mouth.
The first red flag was the texture. It was incredibly dry. Like, moisture sucking, desert level dry. The second flag was the flavor profile. Heavy on the bone meal, light on the joy. It tasted vaguely like stale beef liver, but with a lingering chalky aftertaste.
"What is this?" I mumbled through a cloud of dust. "A new type of cookie?"
My sisters didn’t answer immediately. They just exchanged a look, and then the entire backseat erupted into uncontrollable laughter. Through her tears, one of them managed to gasp out the truth.
I hadn't just eaten a bad snack. I had just consumed Scooby's favorite diet.
The Aftermath
It turns out they had raided the pet supply aisle before we left, waiting for the perfect moment of highway madness to feed me actual dog treats.
I survived, of course. My pride took a heavy hit, and my trust in family snack offerings was permanently damaged. To this day, if a snack doesn't come directly out of a sealed, human-approved wrapper that I opened myself, I look at it with extreme suspicion.
Have your siblings ever tricked you into eating something bizarre? Would you do the same to a younger sibling?
