The recorder is a woodwind musical instrument in the duct flute family, which also includes tin whistles and flageolets. It is played vertically and distinguished by a thumb-hole for the upper hand and seven finger holes on the front. If you have actually heard of the recorder, than you probably had to play it back in grade school. I think I was in the third grade when this little piece of plastic that looked like a flute came my way. To be honest, I thought it was the dumbest thing. Of course, I wasn't the most musically inclined person at that age. But, I did always picture myself charming a snake with it.
If you have never heard of the recorder, let's find out a little bit more.
Historical Significance
The recorder flourished during the Renaissance and Baroque eras. Famous composers like Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, and Telemann wrote major works for it. It fell out of favor in the 18th century as the transverse flute—which was louder and more dynamically expressive—took its place in evolving orchestras. It was revived in the early 20th century by Arnold Dolmetsch and popularized in education by Carl Orff (Thanks Carl).
How It's Used Today
It is famously used in primary schools as an introductory instrument because it is inexpensive, portable, and relatively easy to learn. Programs like "Recorder Karate" motivate students by awarding colored "belts" for mastering songs. Now, I didn't have the "Recorder Karate" program, but I have to say, at least that makes it sound cool.
4 Reasons Why Schools Use It
Inexpensive: Durable plastic models are very cheap, making them accessible for entire classrooms.
Simple to Start: Unlike many other wind instruments, it requires no complex mouth position (embouchure) to produce a sound—you simply blow.
Portability: Its small size is ideal for children's hands and easy to carry between home and school.
Foundational Skills: It teaches essential music theory, breath control, and finger dexterity that can be applied to other instruments later.
Did the recorder provide learning for us as young kids. Yes. Do I think it's cool? Not really.... Until I watched this!
So I guess the recorder can sound pretty good. This makes me wonder, what else did I think was dumb, could actually be cool, when put in the right hands?
