A pecan is a type of edible nut with a rich, buttery flavor, growing on large hickory trees native to the Southern U.S. and Mexico. The name originates from 18th-century Algonquian words meaning a "nut that requires a stone to crack". But, it has always been one of those words I hear people pronouncing differently.
Ways it is said across the U.S.:
[pick-AHN] – usually heard in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and a few other nearby states
[pee-KAHN] – heard widely throughout the U.S.
[PEE-can] – heard in the northeast and some eastern coastal states
[PEE-kahn] – this one’s pretty limited to Michigan and Wisconsin, bless their hearts
So, how do you say it? I'm a pee-KAHN guy. So when I say I want some pie, I say pee-KAHN pie. Which is the proper way to say it. Right?
We could argue all day, right. But one thing is for sure, pecans are good for you. Pecans are packed with heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber, and over 19 vitamins and minerals (including vitamin E, zinc, and magnesium). Consuming them helps lower LDL "bad" cholesterol, manage blood sugar, reduce inflammation, and support weight management due to their satiating properties.
So, go grab some pecans today!
