Giant Cake Pop Attempt: Say Goodbye To Starbucks

My son was turning 15 on Saturday and today was Easter.  He really loves cake pops from Starbucks.  So, my goal was to make a giant cake pop for the Easter/Birthday celebration at my Mom's house for him.  Because just a tiny little cake pop wouldn't cut it!  We needed something that would feed everyone.  So, I set out to make this happen.

I started by finding out how to make a cake pop.  After watching many YouTube videos of people making tiny little cake pops, I found a recipe that would work.  My only change was I was using Gluten Free cake mix so my mom and my sister could try it as well.  So here's what you need:

- 2 boxes of cake mix (I made King Arthur Gluten Free Confetti Cake)

- 2 containers of Frosting (I used Cream Cheese Flavored Frosting)

- 2 Pack of Hemisphere Cake Pans (Found on Amazon $21)

- 1 Pack 12oz Wilton Candy Melts (I used blue)

Then you bake the two cakes as seen below.  Just need some oil and eggs for your cake mix.

The cakes done. You can see at the top the 2 hemisphere cake pans the mix will go in.

Then it's a matter of breaking up the cakes into pieces in a bowl.  Add the frosting to it and stir it up. Split the mixture up and put one half in each hemisphere cake pan. Then put the two pans into the freezer.  Wait a couple of hours and let the mixture take it's form.  Then pull them out and pop the two halves of the circle together.  Use a hard plastic straw and put in down the middle of the two half circles to make sure they stay together.

Then it's a matter of melting down the Wilton candy melts in the microwave.  The cake pans I purchased on Amazon came with a brush to use to put on the candy melt mixture.  But, in hindsight, it got the mixture on there, but perhaps a smoother cake knife would of worked better putting on the frosting so it was smooth looking. After getting the candy melt on there I put it in the fridge to let it set for another hour.  An hour later it was done.

The finished product.  It may not look the smoothest.  But the taste was amazing!

The final step of course was eating it.  Today, we cut it open and tried it out.  And..... It was good!  Not just good, but I would say great.  Having the frosting mixed in with the cake makes it more moist and it doesn't taste like normal old cake.  And of course the candy melt on the outside gave it that great cake pop taste and texture.  Will I say this looks perfect?  Absolutely not.  But it tasted good and I achieved my goal to my my son a giant cake pop!  Try making your own today!
