Death and Other Details: A Stylish Murder Mystery That Deserved More Attention

If you're anything like me, you're always looking for a mystery series that keeps you guessing until the very end. That's exactly what I was hoping to find when I started watching Death and Other Details on Hulu. While it may not have become the next massive streaming sensation, I think it's a show that's worth talking about.

The series follows Imogene Scott (Violett Beane), a woman who suddenly finds herself the prime suspect in a murder aboard an extravagant luxury ocean liner. Her only hope of clearing her name is teaming up with the legendary detective Rufus Cotesworth, played brilliantly by Mandy Patinkin. Together, they navigate a ship full of wealthy passengers, hidden agendas, and enough secrets to fill every cabin. The show blends classic whodunit storytelling with modern twists, all set against the backdrop of a glamorous cruise ship.

Mandy Patinkin steals nearly every scene he's in. His portrayal of Rufus Cotesworth is quirky, intelligent, and entertaining. He's the type of detective who notices details everyone else misses, making every conversation feel like an interrogation waiting to happen. Violett Beane also does a solid job as Imogene, whose personal connection to the mystery makes the investigation much more emotional than your average crime drama. These two actors have great chemistry that keeps the story moving.

The show isn't perfect. At times, the plot gets a little too complicated for its own good. There are so many characters, flashbacks, and interconnected storylines that you may find yourself rewinding to make sure you didn't miss an important clue. I appreciated that the writers weren't afraid to keep viewers guessing. Every episode introduces another layer to the mystery, making it difficult to predict who can actually be trusted.

Unfortunately, the series lasted only one season before Hulu decided not to renew it. That's disappointing because the premise had plenty of room to grow, and I would have loved to see more adventures featuring Rufus Cotesworth solving impossible mysteries around the world.

If you're a fan of locked room mysteries, detective stories, or stylish crime dramas like Knives Out, you'll probably enjoy Death and Other Details. Just be prepared to pay attention, this isn't a show you can have playing in the background while scrolling through your phone.

Out of 10 Popcorn Kernels, I give it a 7.
