There's a reason people call the Iowa State Fair "Iowa's Great Get-Together." For eleven days every August, the Des Moines fairgrounds turn into this wild, sprawling carnival of food, animals, music, and pure Midwestern chaos and honestly, I wouldn't miss it for anything. In fact, in my 47 years I have only missed the Fair 2 times.
Let's be real, most people show up for the food, and the Fair does not disappoint. This isn't your average corn dog and funnel cake situation (though yes, they have those too). We're talking deep-fried everything, including butter, Oreos, pickles, you name it. Every year there's some new "world's first" food item that sounds ridiculous on paper but somehow everyone lines up for anyway. I've learned that the smart move is to go with a group so you can order five things and split bites, because your stomach only has so much room and the choices are endless.
The Butter Cow
You can't talk about the Fair without mentioning the Butter Cow. A life sized cow sculpted entirely out of butter, kept in a refrigerated case, sitting there looking majestic every single year since 1911. It sounds strange until you see it in person and there's something genuinely impressive about the detail sculptors get out of a slab of butter. It's one of those Fair traditions that feels a little silly and a little sacred at the same time.
Animals Everywhere
Don't forget this is still, at its core, an agricultural fair. Wander through the livestock barns and you'll find prize hogs, massive steers, rabbits, chickens, and 4-H kids who've clearly poured their whole summer into getting their animal ready for judging. There's something grounding about it, especially with how much of the rest of the fairgrounds is flashing lights and fried food. It's a good reminder of where Iowa's roots actually are.
The Midway and the Grandstand
Once the sun starts going down, the Midway lights up and the rides kick into gear. Whether you're into the big rides or just want to win an oversized stuffed animal at a game that's rigged just enough to keep you trying, there's something for everyone. And if you time it right, the Grandstand brings in some genuinely big name concerts and events each year. It's worth checking the lineup before you go.
Why It's Worth Going Every Year
What gets me every time is just how much ground the Fair covers. You can spend a whole day just wandering, checking out the exhibit halls, watching a livestock competition, catching a live show, and still not see everything. It's overwhelming in the best way. And there's a specific kind of nostalgia to it too, especially if you grew up going as a kid. The smells, the sounds, the sheer amount of walking, it all hits different once you've been going for years.
If you've never been, my advice is simple: wear comfortable shoes, have lots of money, and don't fill up before you get there. Give yourself a full day, and don't try to plan too much. Half the fun is just stumbling into whatever's happening next.
See you at the Fair!
