Every year on July 31, avocado lovers have a great excuse to celebrate one of the most versatile foods around, National Avocado Day. Whether you're a lifelong fan or someone who's just recently jumped on the avocado bandwagon, now is the perfect time to enjoy this creamy green fruit.
I'll admit, there was a time when I didn't understand all the hype. But after trying avocados in a few different recipes, I quickly realized why so many people love them. They're rich, filling, and can be used in everything from breakfast to dessert.
One of the best things about avocados is how incredibly versatile they are. If you're looking for a few new ideas, here are some fun ways to enjoy them.
1. Classic Guacamole
You can't celebrate National Avocado Day without making a fresh batch of guacamole. Mash ripe avocados with lime juice, diced tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and a little salt. It's perfect with tortilla chips or fresh vegetables.
2. Avocado Toast
Sometimes the simplest meals are the best. Spread mashed avocado on toasted sourdough or wheat bread, then top it with everything bagel seasoning, sliced tomatoes, or a fried egg.
3. Add It to a Burger
A thick slice of avocado makes almost any burger taste even better. It adds a creamy texture that pairs perfectly with bacon, cheese, and grilled onions.
4. Blend It Into a Smoothie
If you've never tried avocado in a smoothie, don't knock it until you've tasted it. It creates an incredibly creamy texture without overpowering the other flavors. Blend it with bananas, spinach, berries, or mango for a refreshing drink.
5. Stuff an Avocado
Cut an avocado in half and fill the center with chicken salad, tuna salad, shrimp, or even salsa. It's a quick, low-carb lunch that's surprisingly satisfying.
6. Slice It on Tacos
Whether it's chicken, steak, fish, or veggie tacos, avocado adds freshness and richness to every bite.
7. Dice It Into a Salad
Avocado instantly upgrades almost any salad. It works especially well with grilled chicken, bacon, corn, black beans, and a citrus vinaigrette.
8. Make Avocado Fries
Slice avocado into wedges, coat them in breadcrumbs or panko, and bake or air fry them until crispy. They're crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside.
9. Top Your Pizza
It might sound unusual, but adding fresh avocado slices after your pizza comes out of the oven is delicious. It pairs especially well with chicken, bacon, tomatoes, and ranch.
10. Chocolate Avocado Mousse
Here's one that surprises almost everyone. Blend ripe avocados with cocoa powder, a little sweetener, vanilla, and a splash of milk. The result is a rich, creamy dessert that's hard to believe started with avocados.
Besides tasting great, avocados are packed with nutrients. They're a good source of healthy monounsaturated fats, fiber, potassium, folate, and several vitamins. They can help keep you feeling full longer and fit easily into many different eating styles.
National Avocado Day is the perfect excuse to try something new in the kitchen. Whether you're making homemade guacamole for friends, piling avocado on your favorite sandwich, or experimenting with avocado fries, there's no shortage of delicious possibilities.
As for me, I think I'll celebrate National Avocado Day with a plate of fresh guacamole, a basket of tortilla chips, and maybe an avocado burger later in the day. After all, there aren't many foods that can be enjoyed at breakfast, lunch, dinner, and dessert!
