Wrigley's Juicy Fruit gum is an iconic, sweet, and fruity chewing gum introduced in 1893 by the Wm Wrigley Jr. Company, now a subsidiary of Mars, Incorporated. Known for its unique, long-lasting flavor, it's often described as a mix of banana, pineapple, and citrus (similar to jackfruit).
One of the most memorable advertisements for this product is from a 1989 commercial where they sing a jingle that says "Take a sniff, pull it out, the taste is gonna move you when you pop it in your mouth". It's 2026 and I still remember and hear that jingle from time to time in my head. It was good advertising. But what exactly was meant by that phrase. To be honest, it sounds like more than just a gum. Of course, I'll be honest, I never take a sniff of my gum when I pull it out of the package. Maybe others do, but the idea of this is new to me. And does the taste of the gum really move me? It almost sounds like they are describing a drug? Are they saying their gum has the same effects as a drug on you? Hmmmm.
Then my next question about Juicy Fruit gum is the actual flavor. What do people really think it tastes like? The description of a mix of banana, pineapple and citrus can mean a lot of different things, to different groups of people. So I decided to get the views of others in the matter. I passed out the gum and here was some of the feedback about the taste:
- "A little fruity, but didn't last long"
- "Banana flavor for 10 seconds, then turns to rubber texture"
- "A mix of sweet fruit"
- "Sugar"
- "Standard bubble gum flavor, lasts for 1 minute"
